Outdoor Dining and Drinks in Chicago

Almost nothing says “Chicago Summer” more than enjoying an outdoor beverage (and considering my last two blogs have been about hot dogs and my CSA box – it’s pretty apparent that anything summer related is right where I want to be). Between refreshing roses and fruity summer cocktails, I’m certainly partaking in my share of drinks al fresco. Without further ado, here are some of the places and refreshments I’ve been testing out for you (all in the name of research, of course).

Al Fresco Dining in Chicago

Cindy’s at The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. While the prices are a bit steep, the view of Millennium Park is unbeatable. I’d save your money and eat elsewhere (perhaps the Shake Shack on the first floor of the hotel) but the creative cocktails are worth the splurge, if for nothing else than to “see and be seen” at one of the hottest spots in town right now. My favorite drink there was the one topped with actual dried rose petals and blended with pistachio milk – giving it a light, flavorful froth. Get there early or call ahead to make reservations for your best chance of snagging a seat.

For a much more laid back patio experience, there are several Four Corner’s Group properties with outdoor seating that I frequent often. Most recently at Kirkwood Bar & Grill, I enjoyed a bucket of sparkling splits on their expansive back patio. Not only is that “bucket of bubbly” as I dubbed it, the cutest, little special I ever did see, they also have above-average bar food and fun, themed-days throughout the summer; such as a beach party complete with sand and a mechanical shark to ride and a “tour de Franzia” which involves tri-cycles and everyone’s favorite boxed wine. A must see event for sure.

In keeping with the causal vibe, one of my favorite finds of the summer thus far has been 90 Miles Cuban Café. Between the authentic music, delicious cuisine, warm service and gentle cross breeze we got – it felt like we really had been transported to this tropical (no longer forbidden?) island. As a BYO they provide sangria mix-ins in and allow you to dictate the wine. I suggest their “white sangria” mix along with a sparkling or rose wine. The “Le Grand Ballon Rose” that we carry here at The Chopping Block (and is definitely a staff favorite) would be the perfect pairing choice.

On my way to perennial favorite outdoor bar, Parson’s Chicken & Fish, I actually stumbled upon the undiscovered (and thus much less-packed) gem of Jack & Gingers. While it doesn’t quite have the draw of the famous fried chicken and ‘lawn games’ that Parson’s has, the isolated patio is quite enchanting, with its ivy covered walls… and outdoor televisions. I’d recommend it for their specials alone (think $5 Jack & Gingers daily).

If you want to get interactive with your outdoorsy-ness, I will remind you that through October (ish?) our outdoor grilling patio at our Lincoln Square location is open for classes and outdoor cooking parties. We offer an array of menus from an Argentine Grill to a New Orleans Brunch and it’s always a good time. On Thursday evenings throughout the summer, the Lincoln Square Chamber of Congress hosts a concert series. What could make for a better date night than a cooking class set to live music?!

The list of options for outdoor dining and drinks in Chicago is quite extensive, so check out the most complete compilation that I’ve seen here on Thrillist and if you have more to add to the list – please do let me know in the comments. Cheers!
