Farmers' market season is now open in Chicago, so here's a preview of some of my favorite local markets.
I'll start on the far Northside of the city in Rogers Park, where on Sundays, along southbound Glenwood right next to the Morse Red Line stop, a small market emerges. Glenwood Sunday Market runs from June through October. It’s quite small with a handful of vendors offering products such as homemade soaps to fresh produce and breads.
The Evanston Market (Saturdays from May 7th though November 5th) is a perfect opportunity to explore the northern outskirts of the city.
On Sundays (from May 15th thought October 30th rain or shine) the Logan Square Market happens, right in the park, one block off the Logan Square Blue Line stop. This is a large, hip, young and interesting market in a truly beautiful spot of town.
The Green City Market in Lincoln Park (Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 7th though October 29th) is close to Lincoln Park Zoo. This is a larger market with lots of vendors and chef demonstrations happening through the season on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The highlight is the Chef BBQ in July. Check their website for more information as the tickets go fast, and be sure to stop by our booth for a sample of The Chopping Block's tasting. Also, mark your calendars for our Owner/Chef Shelley Young's demonstration on Saturday, September 24.
The Daley Plaza City Market (Thursdays from May 12th though October 27th) is right next to the Picasso sculpture, which people still debate whether it's a dog or a woman. This market includes plenty of food and entertainment right in the heart of the city. It's a great spot to visit if you are working nearby. Take your lunch break here, or enjoy the market on your a day off, shopping and planning your weekly meals.
On Thursday evenings, head to the Lincoln Square Farmers Market for live music, food and fun for the whole family. This market begins on Thursday, June 9 and runs until October 27th. While you are there, stop by our Lincoln Square location for farmers market inspiration, and sign up for an outdoor grilling class on our patio.
My Prost! German Feast on the Grill is happening on Tuesday, June 29. Don't miss this menu full of traditional German cooking techniques and authentic recipes for the grill including:
- Marinated Grilled Brats with Horseradish Sauce and Potato Salad
- Grilled Pork Filets with Radish and Arugula Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette
- Bratapfel (Baked Apples on the Grill with Cinnamon and Sugar a la Mode)
